Coffee and skincare: the Skincare & Starbucks briefing

🌡️ THE WARM-UP

Finally, we are back with Episode #3 of Skincare & Starbucks!

Yes, it has been a while. Between a brand-new website, a very full academy and a spring that somehow became the end of July, the newsletter had to wait its turn. It will not be waiting that long again.

And there’s plenty to catch up on, because the industry has not been sitting still.

This week: what the late-summer slowdown actually means (and the smartest thing to do with it), the exosome wave that’s swept the UK while we were away, repair season arriving early, and the aftercare pairing everyone keeps asking us about.

Grab your coffee. Let’s get into it.

SKINCARE QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Sunscreen is the only anti-ageing product with actual evidence behind it. Everything else is a bonus.”

Dr. Sam Bunting, Dermatologist

(Kirsty says: I say some version of this to every single client, every single consultation. It costs nothing and does more than half of what’s in most people’s routines combined. And it feels very apt for late July, because every summer of sun, travel and “I’ll moisturise properly when I’m home” catches up with clients right about now.)

🔥 INDUSTRY BUZZ

The summer slowdown is real. Don’t be alarmed.

Let’s say the quiet part out loud: a lot of clinics have told us the last few weeks have been slower than usual. Clients are on holiday, diaries have gaps, and if you’re newer to the industry it can feel like something is wrong. It isn’t. This is the seasonal rhythm of the skincare business, and it happens every single year as the summer heat cools off.

Our advice: don’t be alarmed, and don’t start discounting out of panic. Focus on what you can control. A quiet fortnight is a gift with an ugly wrapper, and further down this episode we’ll show you exactly what to do with it.

Repair season is arriving early (and LED is back with it)

The flip side of the lull: post-summer “repair season” is becoming its own booking category, and it’s landing earlier this year, with some practitioners reporting sun-damage and barrier-repair enquiries from mid-July rather than the usual September rush. Framing matters here: uptake is consistently stronger when it’s sold as “repair,” not “correction.” Clients respond better to being helped than being told something needs fixing. Riding alongside it, LED light therapy is having a proper resurgence: once a gentle add-on, it’s being repositioned as a legitimate recovery protocol and an easy course-based upsell either side of more intensive treatments.

Clients are arriving more informed than ever

Practitioners keep telling us the same thing: clients now come in having researched specific treatments and ingredients, so the consultation has shifted from “educate from scratch” to “confirm and refine.” The clinics leaning into that with honest, unhurried treatment planning are converting better and keeping clients longer. The bar is rising, and that’s good news for everyone who does this properly.

💉 TREATMENT SPOTLIGHT:EXOSOMES (AND WHY ANTEAGE IS EVERYWHERE)

What they are:

Exosomes are tiny messenger vesicles, the packages cells use to send growth factors and signalling molecules to each other. Applied topically straight after a treatment that has opened the skin, the thinking is that they hand your skin’s repair processes a very well-written instruction manual at exactly the moment it’s listening.

AnteAGE MDX Exosome Solution and diluent vials

Why AnteAGE specifically is everywhere:

If you’ve been on any aesthetics event floor or supplier call this summer, you’ll have heard one name on repeat: AnteAGE. It’s worth understanding exactly why, because the reason is more interesting than “good marketing.”

Most exosome products you’ll see internationally are human-derived, and human-derived material is not permitted in UK cosmetic products. AnteAGE’s are lab-made (bio-identical rather than harvested from human donors), which is precisely why they have become the name UK clinics can actually work with. Their protocols are widely used alongside SkinPen and other microneedling systems here, and their practitioner education is genuinely good.

The bit every practitioner should know:

Here is the line that matters, and it catches people out. The MHRA regards injected exosomes as medicinal products, and none are authorised for aesthetic use in the UK. Topical application after microneedling is the route UK practitioners use. Injecting them is not. A recent undercover investigation found clinics offering facials using exosomes harvested from human tissue, which is exactly the sort of headline that damages trust in the whole industry.

So the question to ask any supplier, in writing, is simple: is this product human-derived or lab-made, and is it intended for topical use? If the answer is vague, walk away. Practitioners who get this right will be the ones still offering exosomes confidently in two years.

The protocol everyone’s talking about:

Post-microneedling is where exosomes earn their keep. Microneedling creates thousands of micro-channels and switches the skin into repair mode, and that short post-treatment window is when a topical serum can reach where it’s useful. Practitioners running this pairing describe calmer recoveries and clients who notice the difference in downtime, not just in the end result. (Want the mechanism properly? Our complete microneedling guide covers the healing cascade in detail.)

The finishing touch we keep hearing about: sealing the treatment with a proper post-procedure mask. An exosome application followed by a barrier-repair mask, so the skin gets the signalling first and then the hydration, cooling and barrier support to recover in comfort. The one practitioners keep naming to us is Cosmacure’s XT73, more on that below.

Pricing insights:

Exosomes are a premium add-on, and clients increasingly know the word before they arrive. Position the pairing as an upgraded protocol with its own price point rather than a freebie on top of standard microneedling: it protects your margin and signals the value of what they’re getting.

Advice from Team MSTA:

Same playbook as ever with a trending treatment: get one outstanding, beautifully documented case study early. Before and afters in clean natural light, the client’s own words, the recovery story day by day. One brilliant case study will sell this protocol for you a hundred times over, and (see the next section) this is precisely the season to capture it.

📱 THE QUIET-WEEK PLAYBOOK:CAPTURE SEASON

Now, back to that summer slowdown.

Here’s the reframe we want you to take into August: quiet weeks are capture weeks!

When the September wave arrives (and it arrives every year: weddings, work events, “new season, new me”), the clinics that win are the ones with a month of brilliant content already in the bank. Four things worth filming while the diary has gaps:

1. The before & afters you never get time to do properly

Natural light, clean background, zero editing. The algorithm is rewarding raw and real, and clients trust it more anyway. Book in a model or a loyal client and shoot a proper set.

2. One treatment, explained by you, on camera

A simple talking-to-camera Reel: what the treatment is, who it’s for, one myth busted. Clients arriving more informed (see above) means educational content converts better than ever.

3. Your “no longer gatekeeping” post

Still performing brilliantly: “No longer gatekeeping my go-to protocol for post-summer pigmentation.” Insider knowledge, gentle FOMO, positions you as the authority in your town.

4. The autumn repair-season announcement

Build your September “repair season” package now, film the announcement now, schedule it for the last week of August. When the wave hits, you’re the clinic that was ready for it.

🌿 PRODUCT WORTH KNOWING:COSMACURE XT73 & HPT78

Given everything above, it’s worth having a proper barrier-support protocol in your aftercare toolkit: something clients can lean on after microneedling and exosomes, between LED sessions, or following more intensive summer-damage treatments.

Cosmacure professional face and neck masks

Relatively new to the UK professional market and worth having on your radar:

Cosmacure, a professional-only face and neck mask range with two protocols available to the UK market. XT73 is the barrier-repair, hydration and glow protocol (the post-microneedling finisher we mentioned above). HPT78focuses on firming through peptide activation. Cosmacure is focused on optimising the post-treatment window to maximise treatment outcomes, and advertises the clinical products as a “post-treatment treatment.”

Early UK adopter feedback has been positive, with many clinicians referring to the masks as the best masks they’ve ever used. It’s the kind of product that supports your clinical work rather than competing with it.

Not a hard recommendation, just one worth exploring if post-treatment recovery is a gap in your aftercare, or if you generally just love a face mask (like us!).

We rate it enough that it now sits inside our own training pathways, and we wrote about why we brought Cosmacure into MSTA over on The Edit.
