The profession
What is a Skincare Aesthetician?
A Skincare Aesthetician (or esthetician, if you prefer the American spelling) is a trained professional who transforms skin with advanced, results-led treatments: facials, chemical peels, microneedling, dermaplaning and the clinical skin knowledge to know exactly when and how to use each one.
It sits at the intersection of skincare and aesthetics. Not make-up, and not injectables like Botox or filler, but the fast-growing space in between: helping clients build genuinely healthy, glowing skin with natural results.
An esthetician school is simply where you learn to do that properly: the science, the hands-on skill and the recognised qualifications that make you safe to practise and worth booking.

Esthetician, aesthetician or beautician?
The words get used interchangeably, so here is the honest version.
Esthetician
The American spelling. A skincare specialist focused on the health and appearance of skin. Exactly what we train, just spelled the US way.
Aesthetician
The British spelling of the same profession. A results-led skincare professional. This is the title MSTA graduates carry.
Beautician
A broader beauty-therapy role covering nails, waxing, lashes and more. Related, but not the same as a specialist in advanced skin.
The pathway
How to become an esthetician in the UK.
At MSTA it happens through one modular Skincare Learning Pathway: Aesthetic Skincare For Beginners. A programme covering Ofqual-regulated VTCT qualifications from Level 2 to Level 6, built bespoke around your life, your pace and the career you are working towards.
Theory happens online, around your life. Hands-on clinic training runs at our academies on Rodney Street and Chapel Street in Liverpool city centre, and students travel in from all over the UK for their in-person weeks.
Start with the science, from zero
You begin with skin anatomy, physiology and the fundamentals of how skin actually works. No prior experience needed. This is where confident, safe practice is built.
Train hands-on with regulated qualifications
You work through Ofqual-regulated VTCT qualifications, Levels 2 to 6, practising on real clients in real clinic conditions rather than on paper.
Get qualified, insured and treating clients
You finish with recognised qualifications that UK insurers and premium skincare brands accept, and the confidence to take your first paying clients.

Qualified Skincare Aestheticians build careers on their own terms: working from a clinic, a salon room or their own space, setting their own prices and their own hours. What is the difference between an esthetician and an aesthetician?
They are the same profession spelled two ways. 'Esthetician' is the American spelling and 'aesthetician' the British one. Both describe a trained skincare professional delivering results-led treatments like facials, peels, microneedling and dermaplaning. At MSTA we train Skincare Aestheticians to a UK regulated standard.
How do I become an esthetician in the UK?
You train through recognised, Ofqual-regulated qualifications and practise on real clients until you are confident and insurable. At MSTA that happens through one modular pathway covering VTCT Levels 2 to 6, built to take complete beginners all the way to qualified, working professionals.
Do I need experience or qualifications to start esthetician school?
No. Most MSTA students start as complete beginners. The pathway is built to take you from zero, including all the skin science, anatomy and physiology that underpin safe, confident practice.
How long does esthetician training take?
The pathway is modular, so it moves at the pace of your life. Many students are treating their first paying clients within months of starting. The brochure sets out realistic timelines for each stage.
How much does esthetician school cost?
Because the pathway is modular and built around your starting point, your pace and the career you want, the investment depends on the route we map for you. Do I need a licence to be an esthetician in the UK?
Not in the way American esthetician schools mean it. The UK has no state licence for skincare professionals, though a government licensing scheme for non-surgical cosmetic procedures is currently in consultation. What matters here in practice is recognised, Ofqual-regulated training and insurance: that is what lets you practise safely, buy professional-grade products and get covered.
Is esthetician school worth it?
Skincare is one of the fastest-growing industries in the UK, and in 2025 skincare sales outsold make-up for the first time. Trained, insured Skincare Aestheticians are in demand, and many of our graduates now run their own clinics and skincare businesses. Their stories are further down this page.
Where is MSTA's esthetician school?
Our academies are on Rodney Street and Chapel Street in Liverpool city centre. Training is hybrid: the theory happens online around your life, and your hands-on clinic training runs at the academy in concentrated blocks. Students travel in from all over the UK for their in-person weeks.
Is the training a recognised qualification?

Do you teach Botox or fillers?
