Sophie's story matters because of where it starts: not with a windfall or a lucky break, but with a double shift and a decision.

“I’d always had a burning desire to open my own business in beauty and skincare. I had completed many mini courses along the way: lashes, nails, basic facials. But none of them gave me the confidence to actually start. I kept searching for something that would truly set me up for success.”

Taking the leap

Determined to find the right training, Sophie spent months researching online and on Instagram for a course that genuinely stood out. That's when she came across MSTA. The interest was instant; the decision took a little more courage.

“Everything I was reading was JUST what I wanted, but I was so scared to take the plunge. Would it really work? Would I be good enough? Could I make enough to cover my bills? We had just bought our first house, and I couldn’t afford to lose my stable income. But one day, after a long 13-hour shift, I had enough. I came home, had a talk with Kirsty, and finally took the plunge.”

What followed is the growth path we encourage every new graduate to take: start lean, reinvest, and let the client list justify each step up.

“I started off working from home in our small spare room, then rented a room in a local building, and finally, in November 2024, I opened my own salon.”

“My business is going from strength to strength, and I am so much happier, more confident, and finally content with my work-life balance. Starting was difficult, as I always knew it would be. I was completely new to running a business, but I was determined to make it work.”

The moment it all felt real

“When I first viewed the shop that is now my salon, I couldn’t believe it. In just two years, I had made it here. That’s when I thought: wow, imagine if I hadn’t taken the chance and done the course with MSTA. Where would I be now? Still waitressing for 13 hours a day?”

Investing in herself

Sophie didn't stop at her first qualification. She has since completed three courses with MSTA, including her Level 3 and Level 4, and attends industry events like Estiworld to keep sharpening her craft.
